BYD Teases First Plug-in Hybrid For India With DM-i Technology
Chinese EV giant BYD has officially teased its first Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) for the Indian market. The upcoming model will feature the brand’s advanced ‘DM-i Super Plug-in Hybrid’ powertrain, marking BYD’s entry into India’s growing hybrid vehicle segment.
The teaser confirms that the new model will use BYD’s ‘Dual Mode-intelligent’ (DM-i) technology, which combines a petrol engine with an electric motor. This setup is designed to offer higher fuel efficiency, smoother performance, and an extended driving range while reducing dependence on charging infrastructure.
The move comes at a time when hybrid vehicles are gaining popularity in India due to increasing fuel prices and range anxiety concerns associated with fully electric vehicles.
Expected Models For India
Industry reports suggest that the upcoming hybrid launch could be either the BYD Atto 2 DM-i or the BYD Sealion 6 PHEV.
BYD Atto 2 DM-i
The Atto 2 DM-i is expected to produce up to 212 hp and deliver a claimed WLTP-certified range of nearly 998 km on a full tank and charge combination. The SUV is likely to focus on efficiency and urban practicality.
BYD Sealion 6 PHEV
The Sealion 6 PHEV could arrive as a more premium and performance-oriented offering. It is expected to generate up to 344 hp while offering a combined driving range of around 1,092 km.
Focus On Efficiency & Long Range
BYD’s DM-i technology primarily uses the electric motor for driving, while the petrol engine works as a generator and supports performance during higher-speed driving conditions. This helps improve fuel economy and reduce emissions without compromising driving range.
The company aims to bridge the gap between conventional petrol vehicles and fully electric cars, especially in markets like India where charging infrastructure is still developing.
With this upcoming launch, BYD is expected to strengthen its presence in India’s premium electrified vehicle segment and compete with other hybrid and EV manufacturers in the market.
